How to Shrink Pores, No Surgery Necessary
May 28, 2018
If there’s one complexion issue that plagues women and men of all ages, it’s pore size. From teens with oily, acne-prone skin to more mature skins with pores that seem to gape, it’s a concern shared by many SISU clients.
We have several methods of treating enlarged pores. First, it helps to understand what pores are and how you can best care for them on a daily basis.
The tiny openings you see on the surface of your skin are indeed pores. What you can’t see is the amount of microscopic hair follicles and oil-producing glands contained in these openings. Think of pores as micro-puddles on the skin. They are lined with oil and, often, bacteria. When the oil combines with bacteria and dead skin cells, pores get congested. This blockage stretches the pore, leading to a vicious cycle of congestion, enlargement, and unsightly blemishes.
For those who are older, the natural depletion of the skin’s collagen results in the pores dilating to a larger size. In this instance, the pores need to be kept clear while also stimulating collagen production to the skin’s maximum potential.
The loss of elastin in the skin, which comes with age and is exacerbated by sun damage, makes things worse. The loss of elasticity removes all support from the pore’s structure, which leads to further enlargement.
So what can you do about it?
First, it’s key to keep the pores clear of the sebum, bacteria, and dead skin. This means regular exfoliation that doesn’t throw the skin out of balance. Many people think granular scrubs are the best way to exfoliate, but these often do real damage, with sharp grit that makes microscopic tears in the skin.
Chemical exfoliation is far more effective and gentle, with powerful compounds derived from natural sources like fruit. At SISU, our chemical peels are a popular way to freshen and smooth your overall complexion, while keeping pores free of excess oil and debris. For sustained, continually improving results, consistency is key. Regular chemical peels keep pores clear and can improve scarring, hyperpigmentation, acne, and other skin afflictions.
To give pores an even better chance of shrinkage, combining chemical peels with microdermabrasion delivers impact to be reckoned with. Microdermabrasion gently removes and vacuums away dead, dull skin cells while stimulating collagen production. As collagen is the support structure that keeps pores tight, replenishing the skin’s supply ‘props up’ the pores to prevent them from widening.
It’s key to clear pores immediately and regular, as leaving them full leads to permanently stretched pores. At SISU, our patients get the best results when microdermabrasion and chemical peels are repeated once per skin renewal cycle – approximately every 28 days. Over time, the cumulative effects of undergoing monthly treatments build on themselves, yielding even better, more obvious benefits to skin.
The last step is one you need to take daily, and is of crucial importance: Protect your skin from sun damage. You don’t want to undo all of your efforts to shrink pore size, then lose the collagen that keeps your pores in their best, smallest possible shape. Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen daily, reapplying every two hours or after sweating or swimming. (Yes, even on those frequently overcast days we see in Ireland.)
Note that wearing a high number SPF doesn’t give you significantly higher protection; the returns on wearing SPF 80 compared to SPF 30 are almost negligible. Worse, you’re less likely to reapply if you have a false sense of heightened protection. Either way, apply sunscreen early, often, and in adequate quantities.
