Everything You Need to Know About Our Lip Filler Treatment.

Are you debating whether to get lip filler? Are you wondering how to know if you’re a good candidate for lip filler? How long does lip filler last? Will my lips swell after filler? If you have any of these questions, or more, you’ve come to the right place.

We’re Sisu Clinic, a doctor-led aesthetic clinic. When it comes to lip filler, we are experts! That’s why we spoke with some of the doctors and medical staff here at Sisu to get the rundown on everything you need to know about lip filler. If you have any lingering questions after, feel free to drop a message and we’d be happy to help!

What is Lip Filler?

Lip fillers are injections that add volume, shape, and definition to the lips. It is a very popular cosmetic treatment. In 2018, cosmetic providers performed over 2.1 million lip filler procedures, and this figure keeps steadily increasing.

At Sisu Clinic, it is one of our most popular and loved treatments. The quick and non-invasive procedure can have a transformative effect on the face. We often see patients in adoration and shock when they see themselves for the first time after the treatment.

The lips play a key role in facial harmony and balance, and you deserve to feel confident. Lip filler can help you get there!

Common Ingredients in Lip Filler

Before you get lip fillers, you might be wondering what is in the lip filler. Some people have a misconception that lip fillers are toxic. In reality, they are far from toxic. Most fillers contain naturally occurring substances which are eventually naturally broken down by the body.

So what ingredients are commonly found in lip filler? Lip fillers contain a variety of substances, usually a combination of naturally occurring substances like hyaluronic acid, and some synthetic compounds like poly-L-lactic acid. The specific substances in dermal filler depend on the type of filler used.

Here are some of the most popular types of fillers:

  • Restylane®, Juvederm® and Aliaxin® - These are hyaluronic acid (HA)-based fillers. HA is a naturally occurring sugar that is found in the joints, eyes and connective tissue. It’s a lubricant and cushion, helping the body stay moisturized and supple. These are the types of fillers we use at Sisu Clinic.

  • Sculptra - Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic polymer. Similar to the ingredients in Radiesse, poly-L-lactic acid is highly biocompatible and biodegradable. This means that your body will slowly break it down and replace it with collagen.

  • Radiesse - Radiesse contains synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite. It has a gel-like substance which actually stimulates collagen production. While synthetic, calcium hydroxylapatite is highly biocompatible, meaning it will look very natural when injected into the skin.

What is the Difference Between Juvederm and Radiesse?

Juvederm, and other hyaluronic acid based fillers like Restylane® and Aliaxin® formulations, are the fillers used at Sisu Clinic. We do not use Radiesse.

The main difference between Juvederm and Radiesse is the ingredients they contain. Juvederm is HA-based, whereas Radiesse contains synthetic compounds. Sisu doctors prefer the results achieved by using HA-based fillers, which is why this is currently the type of filler we offer at our clinics.

Aside from the difference in ingredients, to understand the difference between Juvederm vs. Radiesse, you’ve got to look at their effects. Juvederm is effective at addressing finer lines and deeper wrinkles, while Radiesse can correct severe lines and folds in the skin.

Radiesse typically lasts longer than Juvederm due to its ability to increase collagen production within the skin. Most patients will notice the results of Radiesse for 18-24 months (and possibly longer) while Juvederm results last for up to 1 year (2 years for juvederm voluma).

Can You Use Sculptra for Lips?

Now you know the difference between Juvederm and Radiesse, let’s compare Juvederm with Sculptra. For starters, Sculptra is not for use on the lips. So if you are looking for the best type of lip filler, Sculptra is not for you! The lips are very dynamic - we are constantly talking, eating and moving our lips. For this reason, Sculptra is not suitable. A hyaluronic acid based filler is best.

Should I Get Lip Filler?

One of the most common questions we get here at Sisu Clinic is “should I get lip filler?”. Often we get asked this question by our patients coming in for a consultation or for patients getting other treatments like Anti-Wrinkle.

Lip filler has become an extremely popular treatment. This is because voluptuous lips are aesthetically appealing and they play a big role in the overall balance and symmetry of the face. The shape and volume of your lips can influence how beautiful you look and feel. That’s not to say that someone with thinner lips can’t be beautiful - but if your thin lips are impacting your confidence, it might be time to take matters into your own hands.

Here are some things to consider before you get lip filler:

  • How long have you wanted to change your lips?
  • Do you want to get lip filler for yourself, or because you feel pressure from other people or society?
  • Have you had a consultation with a doctor about whether you are a good candidate for lip filler? If not, click here.
  • Do you have the means to keep up with treatments? Typically, lip filler lasts for six to nine months before you need to come in for a top up.
  • Do you understand how the treatment works and what aftercare protocols look like? If not, you’ve come to the right place - we’re going to cover all of your lip filler questions today!

How Does Lip Filler Work?

The best way to plump up, add definition, and restore lost volume to your lips is through dermal fillers. But the question remains: how do lip fillers work?

Lip Filler Before and after at Sisu Clinic

The ingredients in dermal fillers that we covered above are made to plump the area they are injected to. The first outcome you’ll experience from lip filler injections is an increase in overall lip volume.

When the filler has been administered into the lips via a few injections, it will settle over the coming few weeks.

How to Get the Lips of Your Dreams

We are all unique, with unique facial anatomy, structures and preferences. Some people have a wide-set jaw, while others have thin and narrow faces. The same goes for your lips. As such, it’s important to do your research before coming into your appointment. It’s vital that you have a good idea of what type of lips you’d like to create.

How to Get the Lips of Your Dreams

Don’t know what types of lips you want? That’s okay! At Sisu Clinic, all of our highly skilled professionals know the best techniques to add natural definition to your lips. This can depend on your goals and preferences, or simply what our doctors view as the best style for you based on your facial structure.

For example, some patients come in and want to add more definition to their lips. For this, adding lip filler to the border of the mouth will give the illusion of more defined, eye-catching lips.

While other patients want to increase the projection of their lips, to create more facial harmony and an enhanced side profile. During your initial consultation, your Sisu doctor will listen to your current concerns and goals, and assess how we can achieve that together using lip filler.

What Happens in a Lip Filler Appointment?

1. Free consultation

The first point-of-call is to book in for a free consultation for lip filler. During this consultation, your Sisu doctor will make sure you are a good candidate for lip filler.

2. Discuss goals

Next, you will discuss your concerns with your current lips and what your goals are. Your doctor will listen and make recommendations based on this. During this time, your Sisu doctor will also give you information about the treatment.

3. Learn about the treatment

During the consultation and the actual lip filler appointment, your doctor will make sure you are one hundred percent informed about the treatment so that you feel comfortable and confident in your decision. This will include information on what you should do before lip filler, the aftercare protocols, and more. You’ll be able to ask questions during this time too.

3. Time to numb!

We want you to have a painless procedure so we will administer numbing cream or a numbing injection to prevent you from feeling any of the lip injections during the treatment.

4. Injection time

Based on your goals discussed with your provider, it’s time to start injecting. Your provider will administer lip filler into the lips, focusing on creating the vision you had in mind. During this time, your provider may check in with you to see how you’re doing or to let you look in the mirror to see how things are progressing.

What Happens After Lip Filler?

There are a few things that might happen after lip filler:

  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

These things are completely normal! Swelling is the most common side effect of lip filler. It will be most apparent 24 hours to 72 hours after treatment, and will then gradually reduce. The intensity of swelling varies person to person, and so does the duration

Check out this article we wrote that covers everything you need to know about lip filler swelling: How Long Does Lip Filler Swelling Last.

You can decrease the swelling and accelerate the recovery time by:

  • Avoiding touching your face
  • Avoiding physical exercise or raising your body temperature
  • Stay elevated for an hour post-treatment
  • Using ice packs
  • Drinking plenty of water

The good news is lip filler swelling goes down very quickly for most people, and then you will be left with the lips of your dreams!

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

We advise our patients to wait for at least two weeks before making any decision on your lips. This is due to swelling, and the time it takes to adjust to your new lips. This is particularly true if you had very thin lips before - it will take your eyes a moment to get used to your new voluptuous lips!

Once you have had lip fillers, you can expect to enjoy them for six to nine months before coming in for a top up. However, as with all treatments, this differs from person-to-person.

How Much Do Lip Fillers Cost?

At Sisu Clinic, we keep things simple. That’s why we are clear about our pricing as we think it’s easier for you to make an informed decision when you are considering getting lip fillers.

Our highly skilled medical providers personalize every treatment to suit your needs, so you may require less than one syringe, and the cost will reflect this.
